Last Saturday night, February 1st, the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup wrapped up their 2013 season with the annual awards banquet in Toronto to honour the great performances of the previous years’ season.
The event was hosted by Grand Prix Kartways, and after some socializing, and the qualification rounds of karting, dinner was served, followed by the awards ceremony.
Presentations were given out to the top-four in points, including champion Shawn McGlynn who was on hand to accept his third championship. McGlynn was presented the championship cup to take home for another year, but seeing as he was presented a championship jacket in 2012, this year the championship jacket was awarded to his crew chief / car owner / father, Roger McGlynn.
Josh Wood, and Jake ‘The Juicebox’ Ott were also on hand to get their second and third-place plaques, while fourth-place finisher Dan Prudhomme couldn’t make the ceremony.
Fifth-place finisher in the standings, Doug Cathcart, was on hand to pick up the award for the ‘hard charger’ for advancing more positions during feature events all season than anyone else, an award he captured in three of the seven individual races.
Champion McGlynn was awarded the Ultimate Custom Fibreglass award for being the champion, and received a decal kit for the championship.
Johnathan Schwemler captured a jacket and a plaque for winning the Rookie-of-the-Year award, which he won by a mere four points over Kevin Allen.
ImageFactor.ca supplied the award for best appearing card, as ‘Bad’ Brad Martin won 250 hero cards for the 2014 season, while also picking up a random draw of a voucher from McColl Racing Enterprises.
Christine Le Grand picked up an award for turning in perfect tire sheets at all the events, while 11 drivers received vouchers from Performance Fibreglass and Leaf Racewear for perfect attendance. They included Shawn McGlynn, Wood, Ott, Prudhomme, Cathcart, Schwemler, Allen, Chad McGlynn, Adam Martin, Brad Martin, and Tim ‘The Intimidator’ Tolton.
There were also two more random draws, as Tim Tolton won a complete driveshaft from London Drive Systems, and Chad McGlynn won a headlight and tail light decal kit from Auto Trim Design of London.
In addition the wrapping up 2013, it was also announced that the series would welcome another corporate partner for 2014, as the tour will now be referred to as the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series presented by Meineke Service Centres.
The even concluded with the features of go-kart racing, as the final page was turned on 2013, and all eyes started to look forward to 2014.
Don’t forget to check out Johnathan Schwemler’s car at this weekend’s Canadian Motorsports Expo at the International Centre in Toronto on February 7th, 8th, and 9th.
